At a glance

HealthHero Ireland can supply tablets for women to keep in reserve as a standby in case emergency contraception with a morning after pill is required.

These are single dose tablets to be used for "emergency contraception" after unprotected intercourse, where contraception has either failed or not been used.

Morning after pills work only if taken soon after intercourse, within 120 hours (5 days) or within 72 hours (3 days), depending on the treatment.

Treatments

Progesterone-only emergency contraceptive pills are available over the counter in many pharmacies in Ireland.

Doctors and family planning clinics sometimes offer to insert an IUCD (intrauterine contraceptive device) up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse. This prevents pregnancy and provides ongoing contraception.
