What your weight loss journey looks like
- Thorough assessment: Before our GPs prescribe any medication or suggest alternative weight loss measures, an initial assessment is necessary. Please be mindful that whatever treatment our GPs advise must be used in conjunction with other weight loss measures e.g. improved diet.
- Injectable medication option: If you’re aged 18-75 with a BMI over 30, your GP may prescribe an injectable weight loss medication. It is at the discretion of the consulting GP to prescribe any medication. There are weekly and daily injectable options which are licensed for weight management. If your BMI is under 30, we don’t usually recommend injections unless there’s a pre-existing weight-related condition (Hypertension, Obstructive sleep apnoea, Prediabetes, Dyslipidaemia). In that case, we’ll need a letter from your regular GP confirming your existing condition. Learn more about our weight loss injections here.
- Oral medication option: If your BMI is under 30, your GP may offer oral medication to help with weight loss. This can be discussed during your weight management consultation.
- Meeting weight loss targets: If you are prescribed medication, we will support you to achieve your goals in terms of improved overall health and functionality. There are minimum targets for weight loss with these medications, which we will assess with you at follow-up intervals. We do aim for a minimum of greater than 5% total body weight loss to warrant continuation with these medications. If an individual is not responding to the medication, an alternative can be considered with our physicians.
- Follow-up check-ins:
- For individuals using weekly injection options, we will follow up every 4 weeks while an individual is titrating the dose upwards. This is to help minimise side effects for a patient when moving up the dose of the medication. Our clinicians will also ensure individuals are engaging with the appropriate strategies to help with weight management. Once established and stable, follow-up is reduced to three to six monthly intervals.
- For individuals using a daily injection option, the follow-up interval is usually 5- 8 weeks from initiation (this time allows for the titration of the dose), we also follow up after 12 weeks using the therapeutic dose of the medication.

There is a range of medications available to help with weight management. These include injectable and oral medications. Injectable medications use hormones such as GLP-1 inhibitors +/- GIP . You naturally secrete GLP-1 after you eat. The GLP-1 inhibitor suppresses appetite so you don't feel as hungry It also slows gastrointestinal transit. GIP is a hormone produced by the gastral tractinal and can delay gastric emptying and improve how our peripheral cells are responding to hormones we produce in our own body. These medications are designed to be used with appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes.
To get started, you’ll first need to register with Healthhero.ie. Once registered, you will be asked to complete a detailed health questionnaire focused on weight management. The initial assessment with the GP explores your experience with weight and potential challenges you've experienced with weight loss. Through this assessment, we will create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include appropriate lifestyle recommendations and where suitable, medications to support weight management.
If we start you on medication, we will follow up with you regularly. The purpose of these follow-ups is to minimise possible side effects with medication and to ensure that your personalised treatment plan is helping you to achieve your goals.
For individuals using weekly treatment options, we will follow up every 4 weeks while the dose is being titrated.
For individuals using daily treatment options, we will follow up after 8 weeks.
For individuals who are established and stable on medication, we will follow up every 6 months.
